In the Beginning..

Little Philippe Cornu was aboard a ship leaving from Europe to the Caribbean when he was just a very young lad.  Unfortunately, the ship met with a terrible hurricane and the ship was lost, along with almost everyone on board.  By some very good luck, Philippe washed up on an island, which was the hangout of a notorious group of pirates.  They took pity on the little lad and brought him into their krewe and made him one of their own.  He was a well-educated fellow and taught the pirates many useful things.  In return, they taught him all the ins and outs of being a pirate, including, when he came of age, how to enjoy their favorite drink…rum.

When Philippe turned 18, all the pirates chipped in some loot and helped him get his first ship.  He was now known as Captain Cornu by his new krewe, and he was well loved.  He was a great pirate and soon became one of the greatest pirates on the high seas.  However, he was never a big fan of rum because he was born of European decent, where wine was the most loved drink.

Captain Cornu soon became known for “borrowing” barrels of wine from nicer ships that were visiting the Caribbean from Europe (along with a few of their coins and jewels). Through the years, more ships arriving from Europe started having little bottles of the stuff on board, and he “borrowed” all those, too.  One ship’s captain, pleased that he didn’t harm his ship or crew (only took some of his loot) gave him a gift.  It was called a “corkscrew”.  Captain Cornu quickly realized it was easier to use this gadget to open the little bottles of wine versus his sword!

From then on, his pirate krewe dubbed him Captain Corkscrew and the rest is history. He became famous around the seas for his love of wine.

Captain Corkscrew eventually had so much “borrowed” wealth and wine, he finally decided to share the wine with visiting captains to the Caribbean.  If you were lucky enough to see Captain Corkscrew’s ship on the high seas, you only had to hoist a yellow flag up the pole and Captain Corkscrew knew it was an invitation to board and dine with them.  He would always bring bottles of his best “borrowed” wine as a gift for their hospitality, and thus, the custom of bringing a gift of wine to a dinner party was born!

Captain Corkscrew had a whole lot of coins and jewels which he collected over the years, too.  But he was lonely and knew he would have to find him a partner soon to share in the wealth.

The Story of CoCo..

While sailing around Florida, Captain Corkscrew came upon a group of Seminole Indians and told them he was looking for a partner.  The Indians told him there were a lot of cute girls located up the coast.  One day, while sailing close to shore, he saw a sweet blond girl sitting on the beach, drinking something from a coconut.  He brought his ship to shore and when the two saw each other, it was love at first sight.  Captain Corkscrew told her the minute he saw her drinking from the coconut, he knew she would be his wife...and he affectionally called her “CoCo”.  And thus, Captain Corkscrew finally found the woman of his dreams.

The krewe loved CoCo and she loved the pirate life.  She was a hard working first mate, and she was definitely thrilled with all the beautiful jewels Captain Corkscrew gave her. But she soon realized she had more jewels than she could ever wear. He had been a very successful pirate!  She said that there was really no need to “borrow” more jewels or coin, and that since they didn’t have kids, they needed to find a way to give some of the loot back to people.  Captain Corkscrew knew she was a good woman and she was right, and promised her he would help her return the “borrowed” goods to deserving people.  From that day forward, theirs became a life of giving.

As they got older, Captain Corkscrew decided it was time to give his ship to a younger, deserving pirate.  But as time went on, he and CoCo missed their boat and decided to find another krewe to join.  Before long, they learned of the famous pirate krewe - Ye Mystic Krewe of Santa Margarita. They loved these pirates because just like Captain and CoCo, these pirates loved to give away loot.  It wasn't long before they were adopted by the krewe.

Today, you can find Captain Corkscrew and CoCo passing out jewels and coins during big events along with the pirates of Ye Mystic Krewe of Santa Margarita.  And if you are especially lucky, you might get an official pin from them. The famous pirates have stayed true to their promise of returning their “borrowed” loot to the people, and in their spare time, their favorite hobbies remain sailing the high seas and of course…drinking wine!
